Adopt A Tree

2021 Adopt a Tree Program

The 2021 Adopt a Tree Program has expired, as we are out of stock of all options. We will be back at the end of the year with our 2022 program. The information below is for informational purposes only.

Every year, the City of Tallahassee provides and plants trees for eligible homeowners, in an effort to increase the urban forest canopy. The trees, depending on the species, are between 5 and 8 feet in height and are species native or cultivars of native species to the southeast. Eligible homeowners living within the City limits may request up to 2 trees to be planted in the front yard within 100’ of the centerline of the roadway and agree to keep each tree watered for one (1) year.

Tree species offered this year included:

Southern Live Oak

Southern Live Oak, Tallahassee's official shade tree! This native evergreen (mostly) oak tree is one of the most majestic trees that are emblems of the South. Their limbs can create an impressive array of branches and are usually covered in Spanish Moss. Their acorns are eaten by birds and mammals, squirrels and deer. Live Oaks are an impressive sight for any large-scale landscape project, but make sure to give them plenty of room to grow - the trunk can grow to more than six feet in diameter!

DD Blanchard Magnolia

‘D.D. Blanchard’ Southern Magnolia is a magnificent evergreen tree, and the largest of all the magnolia varieties. It has a very straight trunk, which allows it to be grown full to the ground or pruned with a visible trunk. Flowers, though few, bloom from late spring through the summer with large fragrant blooms! This classy tree makes a great accent tree for larger landscapes, or as a single focal point for medium-sized yards.

Okame Cherry

'Okame' Cherry is a quickly growing understory tree when young. During the fall, leaves can turn shades of yellow, orange and red. In late winter to early spring, the trees have a multitude of single pink blooms, stealing the flora show! It’s a very low maintenance tree; the most heat, humidity and drought tolerant flowing tree. The Okame Cherry tree is wonderful for lining long driveways or planting in groups at a focal point in your yard. Due to the limited quantities, properties with overhead utilities will be given priority for this species.
