Wayfinding is an experience - that of an individual attempting to navigate an unfamiliar environment. When the information needed to access that environment is provided in a thoughtful and structured manner, the unfamiliarity quickly becomes comfortable, friendly and welcoming. A successful wayfinding system manages this experience, using signage as a communication tool to facilitate access, while reflecting civic culture and complementing the environment of its settings.
The Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department, working with local citizen groups and agencies, designed a Wayfinding Signage System recognizing eleven unique districts in our area. This system provides effective, flexible and sustainable signage with attractive visual standards for presenting easily understood information. It also complements other initiatives, such as the Multimodal Transportation District (MMTD), the Midtown Action Plan, and the City of Tallahassee Neighborhood First Plans. By the summer of 2020, 60 signs were in place in six of the recognized districts...with more to come.
Our Wayfinding System focuses on the three primary user interests - walking, driving, and cycling. Below are examples of signage for each purpose. To explore further, please visit the interactive Tallahassee-Leon County Wayfinding Map.
