Wayfinding is the experience of navigating an unfamiliar environment. When the information needed to access that environment is provided in a meaningful manner, the unfamiliarity quickly becomes welcoming. A successful wayfinding system manages this experience, using signage to facilitate access, while complementing the environment of its settings.
The Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department, working with local citizen groups and agencies, designed a Wayfinding Signage System recognizing eleven districts. This system provides effective signage with visual standards for presenting directional information. It complements other initiatives, such as the Multimodal Transportation District (MMTD), the Midtown Action Plan, and the City of Tallahassee Neighborhood First Plans.
Our Wayfinding System focuses on the three primary user interests - walking, driving, and cycling. Below are examples of signage for each purpose. To explore further, please visit the interactive Tallahassee-Leon County Wayfinding Map.
