Construction to Modernize Traffic Signals and Improve Pedestrian Safety

Begins July 20, Temporary Detours Planned

July 17, 2026

The City of Tallahassee will soon begin construction to upgrade the existing traffic signals at the intersections of W. Tharpe Street / MLK Jr. Boulevard and Northwood Boulevard / MLK Jr. Boulevard. These improvements will modernize transportation infrastructure, creating a safer and more reliable traffic network for drivers, pedestrians and everyone who uses the corridor.

Construction includes replacing the existing strain pole signals with mast arms, relocating traffic cabinets, improving pedestrian signalization, sidewalk reconstruction and crosswalk improvements. Construction will begin July 20. The majority of the construction work is anticipated to be complete before the start of the school year in mid-August, pending no unforeseen circumstances or severe weather delays.

To safely facilitate construction, there will be temporary lane and intersection closures.

  • At the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Tharpe Street, there will be rotating single lane closures in all directions from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Closures will swap sides as work progresses.
  • The intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Northwood Blvd. will be closed completely from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Traffic will be detoured around the intersection closure via N. Monroe Street and W. Tharpe Street.
  • Following the above closures, there will be full intersection closures at both intersections for a short duration. The date of those closures will be provided in advance of the closures.
