Clean Out the Clutter with “Cash for Trash”
The City of Tallahassee’s Biannual Event Returns on Saturday, Oct. 16
October 08, 2021
Fall is the perfect time to declutter your home and garage. To help you get rid of all your unwanted items, the City of Tallassee’s popular “Cash for Trash” event is back. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City’s Community Beautification and Waste Management facility, located at 2727 Municipal Way, near Messer Field.
“Cash for Trash” is traditionally held each year on the third Saturday in April and October. It allows all City residential utility customers to properly dispose of household trash items that are too large to fit in their 96-gallon garbage containers, as well as hazardous waste.
As a thank you, participating City residential utility customers with an active garbage service account will receive a $5 credit toward their utility bill. To receive the credit, customers must present a City utility bill before unloading materials. Customers can make multiple trips; however, only one credit per utility bill will be issued. This allows customers disposing of items for their neighbors to do so and assist them in reaping the benefits of “Cash for Trash.”
Examples of items residents may bring to “Cash for Trash” include furniture, large and small household appliances, tires (limit of four per customer; no commercial tires), household hazardous waste and electronic items (including all computer parts). Batteries, cleaners, paints, pesticides and solvents are also accepted. These household hazardous waste items can have a serious impact on the environment if improperly disposed of through the trash or sewer system.
Although the City encourages residential utility customers to use their every-other-week bulky item collection service for disposing of large items behind the curb, “Cash for Trash” provides an alternative method of disposal. This is especially useful for those who live in apartments or have several large items to dispose.
This event is not for commercial customers. Also, no household garbage, construction/demolition debris or yard debris will be accepted.
The City continues to be a leader in the field of sustainability. Events such as “Cash for Trash,” the single-stream recycling program and initiatives like the Clean Energy Resolution adopted in 2019 by the Tallahassee City Commission put into action the organization’s commitment to environmentally friendly practices.
“Cash for Trash” is coordinated by the City’s Community Beautification and Waste Management department. Visit Talgov.com/YOU or call 850-891-4968 for more information.
