Sandbag Locations to Open Today
City Taking Proactive Measures Due to Anticipated Impacts from Dorian
August 29, 2019
In preparation for anticipated impacts from Hurricane Dorian, the City of Tallahassee is opening two sandbag locations to help residents prepare for heavy rainfall and the possibility of localized flooding. The current forecast details heavy rain and strong winds beginning as early as Saturday night.
Starting at noon on Thursday, Aug. 29, bags and sand will be available at James Messer Park South, located at 2830 Jackson Bluff Road (on the south side of Jackson Bluff Road between Appleyard Drive and Dupree Street), and at the old Northwood Mall, located at 1940 North Monroe Street (near the entrance off North Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.). These sites will be open until the inclement weather has passed and it is determined there is no longer a need.
Citizens will need to bring their own shovels and be prepared to fill bags themselves. There is a 25 bag limit per household.
City crews will monitor the sites and provide additional sand and bags as needed between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day the sites are open.
To help mitigate potential flooding, City crews are checking known drainage trouble spots for blockages and clearing obstructions. Within the Tallahassee city limits, citizens may report flooded streets by calling 850-891-4968.
The City is proactively preparing and encourages citizens to do the same. Now is the time for citizens to update their utility contact information to ensure they receive email and text alerts from the City. To update your City utility account information, visit Talgov.com/Update.
