To help StarMetro ensure public transportation is accessible, efficient, and equitable, The City of Tallahassee has identified construction of a Southside Transit Center (STC) on the northwest corner of Orange Avenue and Meridian Street as a strategic initiative. The STC will be a major step in assuring Tallahassee has an efficient transit network supported by leading public transit services. This parcel of land is located within the larger Orange/Meridian Placemaking Project, including stormwater improvements and other related infrastructure needs. These efforts in combination with increased service and transit amenities provided by the STC will improve economic, education, residential and business opportunities for the southside and Tallahassee at large.

Fall Construction Update:

• Construction of the City of Tallahassee's Sustainable Southside Transit Center continues to make strong progress toward substantial and final completion. Several important roofing milestones have been achieved, including completion of the roof drains, insulation, roofing membrane, roof penetrations, roof hatch, and associated quality-control inspections. Four pantographic bus-charging arms have also been delivered to the site. Interior framing is now underway in the East and Central Pods, while mechanical and plumbing rough-in activities are advancing throughout the second-floor areas of the East, Central, and West Pods. Installation of the charging arms and associated electrical cabinets is also progressing.
• Building enclosure and structural steel work continue to move forward. West Pod sheeting is approximately 80% complete and will be finalized following staircase installation. Steel for the East Pod is scheduled to arrive this month, along with the remaining steel bracing and East and West staircases. Inspections will be coordinated with the steel erection sequence, including the East Pod steel and MEP rough inspections required before the composite slab is poured.
• Over the coming weeks, work will include continued steel erection and framing, waterproofing of the Central Pod, West Pod, and Maintenance Building, and interior electrical rough-in for the East and Central Pods. Installation of power and data infrastructure at column locations will also begin, and the remaining four pantographic charging arms are scheduled for delivery this month. Following the required inspections, work will proceed with the East Pod composite slab pour, slab-edge extensions at curtain-wall interfaces, ticket-counter preparation, and the remaining backfill and pour-back activities.
• With multiple trades actively working across the site and several key milestones approaching, the project is maintaining positive momentum toward its anticipated year-end completion.

StarMetro's Southside Transit Center will be the first public transit center built in our community since C.K. Steele Plaza in the 1980s. Today, land regulation, urban planning, transit development and local, state, and federal building and permitting requirements are much more advanced.

This creates a robust process where the many stages and levels of due diligence and compliance required to build a project of this nature gives all stakeholders, especially community members, an opportunity to evaluate decisions and provide input at many steps along the way to breaking ground.

Building a new transit center from the ground up will be a multi-year coordinated effort led by StarMetro/City of Tallahassee and under the purview of the Florida Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration.

The community engagement and design portion of this project, broken into phases, is part of the exciting, multi-faceted process of creating more equitable transportation options for the southside of Tallahassee.
