Tallahassee Beautification Project Paints a Bright Future
“Girls Can Do Anything” Campers Lend a Hand to Spruce Up Downtown
July 15, 2019
This week, the City of Tallahassee will provide an opportunity for some of our community’s younger residents to transform a bland and often graffitied retaining wall into a vibrant work of art. On July 18 at 10:30 a.m., City leaders will join the Oasis Center for Women & Girls "Girls Can Do Anything" campers at the downtown Food Truck Court, located at 425 S. Bronough St., where, together, they will complete this beautification project.
“This will be a wonderful experience for the girls, one that underscores the positive change that can occur when we work together for the betterment of our community,” Commissioner Dianne Williams-Cox said. “In addition to instilling the volunteer spirit in our youth and brightening up our downtown, we are hopeful that this artistic expression will help combat graffiti in the area.”
Unabated graffiti on both public and private infrastructure can have negative effects on a community and is a criminal offense. This project is a precursor to a graffiti abatement pilot program recently approved by the City Commission. The pilot program, which will be implemented later this year, aims to prevent and eradicate graffiti and will include funding for murals through a portion of code enforcement fines collected each year. When the pilot program launches, information will be available at Talgov.com.
Members of the Downtown Improvement Authority, Knight Creative Communities Institute and LeMoyne Arts will also be on hand to join in the fun. If you are interested in participating, please call the City’s Sustainability & Community Preservation department at 850-891-7007.
