School Zone Speed Enforcement Resumes August 12

As students prepare to return to the classroom, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) is reminding drivers that the School Zone Speed Enforcement Program will resume on Wednesday, August 12.

Automated speed detection systems will be active in designated school zones during enforcement hours to encourage drivers to slow down and help protect students, families and school employees traveling to and from school. There will be no warning period when enforcement resumes this school year. Beginning August 12, vehicles traveling more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit during designated enforcement periods may receive a $100 notice of violation.

The automated systems operate during established school zone periods, including the time surrounding student arrival and dismissal. Drivers are encouraged to pay close attention to posted speed limits and school zone signage as they travel throughout the city.

The School Zone Speed Enforcement Program is part of the City of Tallahassee and TPD’s continued commitment to improving roadway safety and reducing dangerous driving behaviors, particularly in areas where children and families are present.

“Keeping our students safe is a responsibility we all share, and that starts with slowing down and paying attention in our school zones,” said Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell. “As students return to school, we’re asking every driver to remain alert, follow the posted speed limits and make safe driving a priority. A few extra minutes on your commute can make a significant difference in protecting a child. However, we will continue to have warning periods when new cameras are installed.”

As the new school year begins, TPD encourages motorists to give themselves additional travel time, remain alert for students and pedestrians, avoid distractions and obey all posted speed limits. By slowing down and staying attentive, every driver can help make the start of the school year safer for our community.
