Skateable Art Park Event

A beautiful day filled with fun, action and creativity

October 26, 2022

loads of skateboards waiting to be decorated and ridden lie on the groundOn Saturday, October 22, Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency, Leon County Government, and the City of Tallahassee hosted a free skate event at the Capital Cascades Trail Skateable Art Park. The Skateable Art Park represents over $1.2 million investment and is one of 17 Blueprint projects in Tallahassee's Southside.

People of all ages enjoyed the festivities which included music, food, demonstrations, free skate lessons, and workshops provided by professional skaters. Boards for Bros, Team Pain Skate Parks, Necessary Skate Company, Phaze One Skate Shop and others distributed a limited number of free refurbished skateboards and handed out other free items.

"Melding arts and recreation, this skate park has quickly become a Tallahassee landmark drawing visitors from across the region," said Blueprint IA Board Chair and Tallahassee Mayor Pro-Tem Curtis Richardson. "This is another example of how adding thoughtful and meaningful amenities to infrastructure projects helps to bring our community together."

skateboards are being decorated by young childrenBlueprint partnered with Boards for Bros to make the event one to remember. Boards for Bros is a nonprofit organization that believes skateboarding is more than a mode of transportation. In addition to being a tool for play, skateboarding is a tool to teach problem-solving and perseverance. Boards for Bros believes a skateboard can change someone's life.

"Today's community event highlighted the many safe ways to enjoy the Skateable Art Park, a unique treasure for children of all ages," said Blueprint IA Board Vice Chair and Leon County At-Large Commissioner Carolyn Cummings. "With this County-City investment, we have created a hub for activity and creativity that will serve future generations."

The Skateable Art Park is part of the Capital Cascades Trail Segment 3 project and is the 94th park in Tallahassee. It is nestled among Coal Chute Pond Park, Florida A&M, Florida State University, Railroad Square Art Park, College Town, and the St. Marks Trail.

"The event was incredible," said Blueprint Director Autumn Calder. "It was rewarding seeing the Southside community come out to the skate park and to watch people who have never skated before experience the sport."

The Capital Cascades Trail Segment 3 project is expected to be completed early next year.
