City Service Updates Following Hurricane Michael

Solid Waste Pick Up to Resume on Friday, Power Restoration Efforts Underway

October 11, 2018

Hurricane Michael, the worst storm to ever hit our region, left behind thousands of downed trees and miles of electric lines, broken utility poles and widespread power outages affecting 90 percent of Tallahassee customers. Assessment crews worked through the night to determine impacts so resources could deploy this morning to begin addressing repairs. Electric utility and mutual aid crews are actively working to restore service to customers. Crews will continue to work around the clock for full restoration.

To assist citizens impacted by Hurricane Michael, the City has opened a comfort station at the Trousdell Aquatics and Gymnastics Center, located at 298 John Knox Road. The comfort station will be open tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and will provide residents with a place to cool off. Swimming and showers will be available at the Aquatics Center. Showers will also be available at the Robinson Trueblood Pool, located at 1115 Dade Street. Additional comfort stations will be opened as power is restored.

Solid waste pick up for residential and commercial customers will resume on Friday, Oct. 12. Collection will shift two days (Wednesday pick up will be on Friday, Thursday pick up will be Saturday and Friday pick up will be Sunday.).

StarMetro’s fixed route bus service will resume tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 12, operating on a Saturday schedule. Service throughout the day is free of charge on the fixed routes and to current, registered Dial-A-Ride patrons. Since Florida State University remains closed, the Seminole Express will not operate. Visit Talgov.com/StarMetro for route information.

On Monday, Oct. 15, City of Tallahassee administrative offices will reopen. The City Commission meeting will be held as scheduled on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m. in the City Hall Commission Chambers, second floor, City Hall, 300 S. Adams Street.

The City’s 24/7 online permitting system (City Works) allows Growth Management to issue permits through web-based email, which means permits can be applied for and issued remotely. This provides flexibility for permitting during the post-storm period. With the City’s online permit portal, sub trade (roofing, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and gas) contractors can pull permits online any time.

For questions about emergency repairs, please contact the Growth Management Department's Building Inspection Customer Service Center at 891-7001, option 2, or via email at GrwthMgtSvcCtr@Talgov.com. You can also visit the walk-in Customer Service Center at the Renaissance Center at 435 N. Macomb Street for assistance between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

As a reminder, when using a contractor, you should always make sure that a contractor is licensed by the State of Florida. The licensing process protects property owners from incompetent, dishonest or predatory workers. A list of licensed contractors can be found at www.myfloridalicense.com or by calling the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation at 487-1395.

Additional updates about Hurricane Michael response and recovery efforts will be posted on Talgov.com.
