City Debuts Public Safety Asset
New TFD Vehicle to Support Local and Regional Response Efforts
July 19, 2017
Through the legislative advocacy of City leadership, the Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) has received new Regional Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Response equipment, included a new tractor/trailer. The vehicle, which City leaders and TFD debuted today, will serve Tallahassee/Leon County and is part of Florida Task Force 2, which serves 13 counties in the Panhandle. This addition to TFD's fleet will be customized with a variety of tools and equipment to aid and protect response teams and the environment during HazMat incidents, which can be some of the most challenging incidents for responders.
"Our first responders deserve the absolute best tools and equipment available to us for keeping our community safe and adequately responding to dangerous situations," Mayor Gillum said. "These state-of-the-art HazMat tools further that mission and will create a positive impact on both a local and regional level."
The 41-foot Hackney drop-deck trailer features low compartment ground heights for increased
access to the vast amount of equipment that will be stored on board, a drop-down ramp on the rear of the trailer for transporting an ATV or other type of wheeled vehicle, a climate controlled room that will serve as an environmentally controlled science lab and logistics center, an on-board WeatherSTEM for highly accurate on-site data, an integrated decontamination shower system with hot/cold water, a 20 kilowatt diesel generator mounted in housing on the front of trailer to permit stand-alone operations when the tractor is disconnected and more.
The vehicle, which cost $470,000, will be housed with TFD's HazMat unit at Station 2, located on Sharer Road.
TFD received the funding through a state grant administered by the Department of Economic Opportunity. During the past year, TFD has worked closely with Hackney to ensure the vehicle specs met all the modern needs of the department's HazMat responders and incidents while remaining flexible for future advancements.
