City Prepared for Weather Threats
Sandbag Locations Open Friday, Crews on Standby
May 24, 2018
The City of Tallahassee is closely monitoring the changing weather conditions in the Gulf of Mexico. City departments are prepared to respond as needed. The largest threat to our area is heavy rainfall, which could cause localized flooding.
To assist citizens with preparing for heavy rainfall and potential flooding, the following community sandbag locations will be open on Friday, May 25.
- James Messer Park South, 2830 Jackson Bluff Road (City)
- Winthrop Park, 1601 Mitchell Avenue (City)
- Tekesta Park at Tekesta Drive and Deer Lake Road in Killearn Lakes (County)
- Apalachee Regional Park (Solid Waste Management Facility), 7550 Apalachee Parkway (County)
- J. Lee Vause, 6024 Old Bainbridge Road (County)
- At the intersection of Oak Ridge Rd at Ranchero Road (County)
City sites will be open by 9 a.m. County sites will be open by noon. Sandbags are limited to 25 bags per household at City sites and 15 per household at County sites. Citizens need to bring shovels to fill bags themselves. Locations will not be staffed, but crews will monitor and provide additional sand and bags as needed. The sites will be open until the storm threat has passed and it is determined there is no longer a need.
Crews will continue to check areas of known flooding to remove obstructions and post warnings for drivers if needed. All motorists should use caution and not drive through flooded areas or around barricades.
Heavy rains can cause power outages. Electric Utility crews are on standby and ready to be deployed, with extra staffing on call as needed.
Citizens are encouraged to stay connected with the City by updating their utility account contact information at Talgov.com/Update.
Citizens should also download the free DigiTally app now. Through the app, you can easily report issues such as downed trees and power outages. Outages can also be reported via Talgov.com and the City's e+ Mobile app. The outage reporting page on Talgov.com, DigiTally and e+ Mobile features a map that shows reported outages. City utility customers can also call 891-4968 to report power outages; call wait times will be longer during major events.
The City will continue to monitor weather conditions. For now, all City services remain intact and on schedule.
