Community Invited to 9/11 Memorial Ceremony (CANCELED)
Tallahassee Fire Department to hold Remembrance Event
September 07, 2017
09/08/17 Update: Due to threat posed by Hurricane Irma, this year’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony has been cancelled.
Sixteen years ago on September 11, 2001, our nation came together in the face of unspeakable tragedy as 2,997 souls were senselessly lost in a series of terrorist attacks. To honor the fallen and support the survivors, the community is invited to come together again for a 9/11 memorial ceremony at Tallahassee Fire Station 16, located at 913 Easterwood Drive, on Monday, Sept. 11, from 8:30-10 a.m.
“First responders are heroes who stand in the gap for us in the face of danger,” Mayor Andrew Gillum said. “The brave men and women of the first responder community lost on 9/11 are not forgotten, and we are eternally grateful for their service.”
The event will center around a recounting by City leaders and first responders of the day’s events and a moment of silence to mark the time the first hijacked plane was deliberately crashed into floors 93 to 99 of the North Tower (1 World Trade Center), which occurred at 8:46 a.m. The program will also include the presentation of the United States flag by a combined first responder Honor Guard team.
Parking will be available at Fire Station 16, but overflow spots are available next door at the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Should Hurricane Irma pose an immediate threat to our area, this event will be cancelled. For more information about the event, please call 891-6600. Educational resources about the events of 9/11 can be found at 911memorial.org.
