COVID-19 Impact
Due to scheduling uncertainty caused by COVID-19, a contingency plan for Summer 2020 is under development to include e-learning opportunities related to TFLA’s 5 Pillars. More information will be available in late May.
TFLA 2020 Updates:
TFLA Youth Applications closed on April 3. Over 200 applications received and are currently under review. If you submitted an application, you should hear more information no later than May 29.
Dr. Kimball Thomas, Director of Community Services, would like to introduce Dr. Tara Huls as the Coordinator of Youth Development who will guide TFLA and manage other youth development programs for the City of Tallahassee. The Tallahassee Future Leaders Academy (TFLA) is a premier leadership program that provides teens with mentorship, job readiness training, financial literacy education and summer employment.
This innovative eight-week program, two weeks of job readiness training provided prior to the six weeks of employment, provides eligible youth with the opportunity to work a minimum of 20 hours per week in a paid position. This position is enhanced with mentorship and guidance by their managers or supervisors. Employment placements are offered through the City of Tallahassee or private organizations around the Tallahassee area.
The two weeks of job readiness training, provided by the City of Tallahassee, includes leadership training, career training, customer service training, financial literacy, and college campus enrichment. Pioneering partnerships with Florida A&M University, Florida State University, and Tallahassee Community College, assist with enhancing youth exposure to college campuses through guided tours by collegiate ambassadors. Partnerships with these post-secondary schools also allow high quality education and job skills training through workshops presented by university personnel.

- Employment: 6-week opportunity with the City of Tallahassee or a local/private organization:
- Youth work a minimum of 20 hours/wk. @ minimum wage
- Job Readiness Training: Youth will acquire skills through interactive workshops and online training.
