TFD Responds to Building Fire on Blountstown Highway
May 23, 2022
On May 22, at 9:52 p.m., the Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) was dispatched to a structure fire located on the 8000 block of Blountstown Highway. Upon arrival, TFD units found a two-story building fully involved with heavy smoke and flames visible. First arriving crews pulled multiple attack lines and began to extinguish the fire and prevent the spread of fire to nearby structures and wooded areas.
One lane of Blountstown Highway was temporarily closed by Leon County Sheriff’s Deputies so TFD units could bring water from a distance to ensure ample water was available. This is an exercise called “water shuttle” and is practiced by TFD crews so that a steady flow of water can be used throughout firefighting operations when a hydrant is not nearby.
TFD crews were able to get the fire under control and search the structure for any occupants. TFD personnel made entry and determined that no occupants were inside the large storage building at the time of the incident. Crews were on scene for about two hours extinguishing the fire. The structure was determined to be a complete loss, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Multiple vehicles in and around the structure were damaged in the fire. No injuries were reported.
TFD was assisted on scene by the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Leon County EMS and Talquin Electric.
