TPD Warns of Recent Scam
March 20, 2020
The Tallahassee Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit is warning the public about a door-to-door service scam. Investigators have received reports of people claiming to be in sales for a service company, going to homes selling products such as DirecTV or Comcast. The subjects perpetrating the fraud are offering a service perceived to be a good deal. The method of the scam involves immediate payment by the fraud victim to set an appointment to receive the product. The appointment never occurs and the scammers have already cashed the checks and keep the cash belonging to the victims.
Investigators advise the public to be aware of scams which seem too good to be true, where payment is requested before service rendered, there is pressure to act quickly to obtain the product or service, and the “salesperson” drops by without notice. A smart idea before acting on a service or product offer is to research the company, call the company to inquire about the offer made by the “salesperson”, do not give in to the pressure of having to act quickly or lose the “special offer”, and do not provide any money up front.
If anyone in the community notices suspicious activity, call the Tallahassee Police Department via the Consolidated Dispatch Agency at 850-606-5800. If you are a victim of a scam or fraud, you have the option of filing a report by using the Digitally mobile app or online at https://www.talgov.com/publicsafety/tpd-onlinereporting.aspx.
