City Service Changes for New Year’s Day Holiday
December 27, 2019
The City of Tallahassee’s administrative offices will be closed in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020. Following are schedule changes for the week of December 29, 2019, to January 4, 2020, for solid waste customers living inside the Tallahassee city limits, StarMetro, the Animal Service Center, the Tallahassee Senior Center and City-run community centers.
Solid Waste
During the holiday week, some residential customers will receive service one day later than their regularly scheduled service. This includes garbage / recycling and yard waste / bulky pickup, which will impact red week customers:
- Monday customers ► No change
- Tuesday customers ► No change
- Wednesday customers ► Thursday, Jan. 2
- Thursday customers ► Friday, Jan. 3
- Friday customers ► Saturday, Jan. 4
Boxes serve as billboards for criminals driving through your neighborhood, and a dry tree poses a fire hazard. To enhance public safety this holiday season, the City of Tallahassee has set up recycling sites in four community locations for cardboard boxes and live-cut Christmas trees. The sites are open through Friday, Jan. 3, and located at Tom Brown Park (443 Easterwood Drive), Jack McLean Park (700 Paul Russell Road), San Luis Mission Park (131 San Luis Road) and Myers Park (1206 Myers Park Drive). When dropping off your live-cut tree, remove all decorations; these trees will be recycled into mulch for use in City parks.
Garbage and recycling containers should both be rolled to the curb for pickup by 6:30 a.m. on collection day, with both containers returned to the home no later than the day after collection. You can also view this information in the 2020 Customer Service Guide, which is being mailed to residential utility customers with an active garbage account and should be delivered soon. StarMetro
StarMetro, the City's mass transit system, will change its operations for the holiday.
- On Tuesday, Dec. 31, StarMetro’s services will operate a regular schedule until 8 p.m., with no night service.
- On Wednesday, Jan. 1, StarMetro’s services will operate on a Sunday schedule, with no night service.

Animal Service Center
The Animal Service Center (ASC) will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1. Normal hours will resume on Thursday, Jan. 2, with the Center opening at 10:30 a.m. Customers needing more information, including photos of animals available for adoption, may visit Talgov.com/Animals or contact the Animal Service Center at 850-891-2950.
City Animal Control will be available for emergency situations only on Wednesday, Jan. 1, and can be reached via the Consolidated Dispatch Agency at 850-606-5800.
New Year’s Eve festivities can be unnerving for many animals. Here are some tips that will help your pet have a safe, enjoyable holiday.
- Keep your pet at home inside a sheltered, quiet area during holiday festivities. Leave a TV on to provide background noise.
- Don’t leave animals chained outside. A frightened animal can become entangled in a chain and get injured or break the chain and flee.
- Make sure your pet is wearing an ID tag and rabies tag, which is required by law. Having your animal microchipped is also an extremely effective means by which to identify them. Contact your family veterinarian or the Animal Service Center for more information about microchipping your pet. If you don't have an ID tag for your pet, you may pick up one for free at the ASC during normal business hours, but you must bring your pet with you! If you lose your pet during the holidays, make sure you check for it at the ASC immediately.
Senior Center
During New Year’s week, the Tallahassee Senior Center will close at 5 p.m. each night except Wednesday, Jan. 1, when it will be closed all day. Tallahassee Senior Services offers programs, activities and opportunities designed to encourage active living, optimal aging and social fitness for independent adults age 50+. City-run Community Centers
Community centers operated by the City of Tallahassee Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department will close at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, and remain closed all day on Wednesday, Jan. 1. The Lincoln Neighborhood Center, however, will close at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, and remain closed all day on January 1. Centers will resume normal hours on Thursday, Jan. 2.
