City Prepared for Potential Weather Threats
Sandbag Locations Open Today
October 07, 2018
The City of Tallahassee is closely monitoring the changing weather conditions. According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Michael will likely be designated a hurricane before landfall. Currently, the NHC is predicting a high probability of impacts for Tallahassee as early as Tuesday morning. While the impacts are still uncertain, our area could experience increased wind activity and heavy rainfall, which could cause localized flooding and downed trees. City departments are prepared to respond as needed, and residents are encouraged to prepare as well.
To assist citizens, the City has opened two sandbag locations. Sandbags are available at James Messer Park South (2830 Jackson Bluff Road) and Winthrop Park (1601 Mitchell Avenue). Sandbags are limited to 25 bags per household. Citizens need to bring shovels to fill bags themselves. Crews will monitor and provide additional sand and bags as needed. The site will be open until the storm threat has passed and it is determined there is no longer a need.
Crews will continue to check areas of known flooding to remove obstructions and post warnings for drivers if needed. All motorists should use caution and not drive through flooded areas or around barricades.
Heavy rains and winds can cause power outages. Electric Utility crews are on standby and ready to be deployed, with extra staffing on call as needed, including assistance from utility partners outside of the projected path of the storm.
Citizens are encouraged to stay connected with the City by updating their utility account contact information at Talgov.com/Update.
Citizens should also download the free DigiTally app now. Through the app, you can easily report issues such as downed trees and power outages. Outages can also be reported via Talgov.com and the City’s e+ Mobile app. The outage reporting page on Talgov.com, DigiTally and e+ Mobile features a map that shows reported outages. City utility customers can also call 891-4968 to report power outages; call wait times will be longer during major events.
