First Responders to Receive Keys to the City
Special presentation at City Commission to recognize individuals for life saving efforts
May 09, 2018
Today. Wednesday, May 9, Mayor Andrew Gillum will present Keys to the City to a group of heroic first responders who acted quickly and courageously to rescue an individual from a vehicle submerged in the Ochlockonee River.
“Our community is grateful for individuals like these, who routinely go above and beyond the call of duty to perform brave and selfless acts of service, most recently rescuing a resident from a near fatal event,” Mayor Andrew Gillum said. “It is my great privilege to present our City’s highest honor to these heroic first responders, and I thank them for continuing to stand in the gap for all of us.”
On the evening of Friday, April 27, Tallahassee Fire Department, Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida Highway Patrol responded to a vehicle that went airborne into the water at the Tower Road Boat Landing. A witness advised that they could see the driver in the backseat, banging on the window, as the vehicle was being carried down river by the current.
Tallahassee Fire Department Lieutenant Todd McLanahan, Engineer Dan Willis, Firefighter Jonathan Jeudy and Leon County Sheriff Deputy Nicholas Kelly were able to swim through the current, break the rear window and rescue the woman from the vehicle.
The Keys to the City presentation will be held during the City Commission, which begins at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, in the City Commission Chambers, located at City Hall (300 S. Adams Street). The presentation will also include remarks from Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil.
The Keys to the City program represents one of the highest honors that can be given from the City of Tallahassee. Each year, the Mayor awards Keys to the City to deserving citizens, organizations, businesses or collaboratives that have had a tremendous individual or collective impact on Tallahassee.
