Tallahassee Fire Department Extinguishes Kitchen Fire
November 04, 2021
At 6:57 p.m. on November 3, the Tallahassee Fire Department was called to a possible structure fire located in the 2300 block of Kara Drive. Neighbors called 911 shortly after seeing smoke coming from a residence.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the structure with heavy smoke coming from the eves of the single-story house. Firefighters had to force entry into the house and found the kitchen engulfed with flames with smoke throughout the home. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and confirm that no one was inside.
No injuries were reported on scene, and damages are estimated to be at $80,000. The cause of the fire was determined to be unattended cooking.
The Red Cross was called out to assist the displaced occupants. TFD was assisted on scene by Leon County EMS and the Tallahassee Police Department.
Kitchen fires are a leading cause of home fires nationwide. With the holiday season ahead, TFD reminds residents to use caution while cooking. Below are three tips to help reduce the risk of an accidental kitchen fire:
- Keep an eye on what you fry.
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so no one can bump them or pull them over.
- Move things that can burn, like kitchen towels, away from the stove.
