Karst Features - Leon County

Water UtilityKarst features are an important land feature in Leon County. Sinkholes can play an important part in the movement of water and potential contaminants, particularly in the the southern portion of the county.

In 1992 the Northwest Florida Water Management District completed Water Resources Special Report 92-8, titled "Characterization of Karst Development in Leon County, Florida, for the Delineation of Wellhead Protection Areas". This report evaluated the relative susceptibility of the Floridan Aquifer to contamination, based on these seven variables:

The primary products of the project included an inventory map of over 3,345 closed depressions in Leon County and a map delineating areas of higher and lower relative susceptibility. The report is available for public review at both the City of Tallahassee Water Quality Division and at the Northwest Florida Water Management District. The report is 83 bound pages and includes three color 11 x 17 maps and 21 additional black and white figures. Copies are available for $9.25 (the cost of printing).
