Hopkins 2 Repowering Project

Electric UtilityCity Improves Arvah B. Hopkins Generating Station

Reliable, cost effective and environmentally sound are just a few words used to describe the City's Arvah B. Hopkins Plant, located on Geddie Road. Most recently, the City has converted its conventional steam-generating unit to a more efficient and economical combined cycle system.

This improvement, known as the Hopkins 2 repowering project, has increased output and reaped several key environmental benefits. It has decreased permitted emissions, such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide, and reduced fuel consumption by about 30 percent per megawatt of electricity generated.

Hopkins Unit 2As a result of the efficiency gains, the City projects in $12-$24 million per year in fuel savings for our customers depending on the cost of natural gas.

While repowering project has brought an immediate fuel cost savings, customers will also benefit from an increase in electric generating capacity and an enhanced environmental signature for the facility.

By combining advanced technology with strict environmental controls and utilizing existing infrastructure, the City continues to remain an industry frontrunner and environmental leader.
