Districts

District MapThe Tallahassee Police Department has split the community into three distinct districts in order to deploy and implement enforcement strategies designed to resolve problems unigue to specific negihborhoods. Citizen and business interaction is a key component of the district system, and meetings are held with these groups on a regular basis to form effective partnerships that assist in preventing and solving crimes. For additional information on crime, traffic crashes, and quality of life in Tallahassee, please visit Tallahassee Online Police Statistics (TOPS).

The Alpha District represents the northwest portion of the city, which encompasses the historic Frenchtown area, the downtown area, most university oriented areas, and all of the northwest neighborhoods. The Bravo District represents the northeastern portion of the city (areas east of North Monroe Street and north of Apalachee Parkway) and is home to two shopping malls (Governor's Square Mall and Tallahassee Mall), two major medical centers (Tallahassee Memorial Health Care and Tallahassee Community Hospital), as well as countless other medical and dental offices, commercial and retail businesses, restaurants, neighborhoods and residential apartment communities. Killearn Estates, Summerbrook, and the newly developed Piney Z subdivision are but a few of the major residential communities in Bravo District. The Charlie Patrol District represents the southern portion of the City of Tallahassee (areas south of Pensacola Street and Apalachee Parkway) and is home to Florida A&M University, the Tallahassee Regional Airport, Florida State University's Innovation Park as well as Southwood Plantation.

Below are specific news articles for each district:

Alpha District

Commander: Ken Sumpter
Assistant District Commander: Glenn Sapp

The Alpha District comprises the northwest portion of Tallahassee and tends to be known as the heart of college activities and business enterprise, while home to numerous traditional neighborhoods. There continues to be significant growth in this area with the addition of several new residential complexes and neighborhoods, new businesses and an expanding university campus. Officers assigned to the Alpha Patrol District remain busy responding to over 60,000 calls for service per year, with traffic crashes and noise/party related problems being the most prevalent problems. The central theme for the Alpha District is definitely "Service to the Community". The police officers assigned to the Alpha District work hand in hand with over 20 active neighborhood and business associations to bring about solutions that work for the northwest part of Tallahassee. Whether the problem is speeding cars or noisy parties, working together works. If you are not involved in a neighborhood or business association you should start now, make this your year to get involved in solving problems. Contact our Crime Prevention Unit or my office for more information. We would also like to welcome any new or returning college students and offer a quick reminder regarding personal responsibilities as a neighborhood resident. Everyone is expected to be a good neighbor and that often starts by getting to know your neighbors and building a friendly relationship. Keep the yard cleaned, dispose of debris properly, respect parking and noise/party limitations, and finally, be responsible and understanding of those who live around you. Look to the Party Patrol link for more helpful information.

He may also be contacted any time for resolution of quality of life issues that you may be encountering in your neighborhoods. From traffic complaints, to excessive noise and trash, and the overall disruption of your daily activities, Capt. Stewart and Lt. Martinez are here to work with you and find a resolution.

Traffic Enforcement Remains #1
Bravo District has the distinction of having the majority of the city's traffic related problems, due in part to primary road arteries running throughout the district (Thomasville Road, Capital Circle NE and Apalachee Parkway to name a few). The 2001 Kerr-Down's Citizen Survey continues to illustrate the fact that nearly all city residents feel that traffic is the number one problem citywide. Traffic (22%) topped out as the primary concern with roads (21%) being second. Crime (8%) was listed as the third most pressing concern. The Tallahassee Police Department is proud to note that almost all of the city residents (96%) responding stated that they felt safe in their neighborhoods, an increase of 4 percentage points from previous years.

Survey Says…
This past year saw Bravo District patrol units address the ever-increasing "Quality of Life" issues with the district. A survey of city residents indicated that speeding and traffic related problems were primary concerns. In response, the Tallahassee Police Department's Special Services Division, in conjunction with Bravo District Patrol, initiated a comprehensive Traffic Enforcement Initiative, targeting speeders and red-light runners. Through the deployment of SMART (Speed Monitoring and Radar Trailer), and aggressive radar and laser traffic enforcement along major thoroughfares and key intersections, our strategy has been an overwhelming success. Aside from its enforcement efforts, the department continues to stress the importance of prevention through such programs as 55-Alive, S.A.F.E., Child Safety Seat Checks, and the newly implemented S.P.E.E.D. Program that educates teenage drivers and their parents on the perils of aggressive driving, and other unsafe driving actions.

Response from the neighborhoods has been very positive. We will continue to address known problem areas and add any identified by our community businesses and residential members.

Charlie District

Commander: Captain David Folsom
Assistant District Commander: Lieutenant Dewey Riou

"The New Frontier"
Charlie District, comprises the Southern sector of Tallahassee and is approximately 39 square miles in size. This richly diverse portion of Tallahassee is home to the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU), the Tallahassee Regional Airport, Florida State University's Innovation Park featuring the world-renowned FSU Magnetic Laboratory, and the ever-growing Southwood Plantation and its and it's plans for another 2,800 homes, 1 million square feet of retail space, 150,00 square feet of office space, a 300 hotel rooms and a 100-bed hospital and school. While the Southside is certainly growing, in 2005 Charlie District officers busily responded to over 53,000 calls for service (31%).

No matter which direction you look, Charlie District is growing! On the City's Southside, the Providence Neighborhood, selected as the City's 2002 Renaissance Neighborhood, will soon witness a revitalization with greater access to affordable housing. The South Monroe Sector Plan will greatly enhance residential and commercial land uses through the installation of sidewalk and streetscape improvements. Cascade Park is currently in development and the gem of this growth is the All Saints Streetscape Improvement Project which involves the revitalization of the Gaines Street Corridor, a major commercial and residential area located between FAMU and FSU.

With growth comes the opportunity for increased criminal activity. Patrol Officers assigned to the Charlie District continue to work hard at developing partnerships with area residents and businesses. With over 15 active neighborhood crime watches and associations, it is our goal to be proactive in reaching solutions that impact quality of life. Whether it be noise disturbances, speeding cars or other nuisance activities, we need your assistance to maintain a standard of living that everyone so richly deserves. If you are not involved in a neighborhood or business association, please make this your year to get involved in solving problems. You may contact our Crime Prevention Unit or my office for more information.
