New Programs Coming to Southside Senior Services!
By Toni Walmsley, TSC staff
August of 2015 marked the 11th anniversary of Southside Senior Services. During those eleven years, TSC programs offered a wide variety of health and wellness, fitness, lifelong learning and social opportunities for residents on the Southside of Tallahassee.
To have a more direct, positive impact on participants' health and wellness, Southside Outreach will now offer an innovative wellness series and two Wellness Fairs. While we continue to offer programs at Jake Gaither and Jack McLean Community Centers, we are adding a new location in October.
Our Wellness Circle at the Oliver Community Center kicks off on October 5, at 10:30 a.m. These casual, one-hour programs offer coffee, snacks, a presentation and health screenings. Transportation will be provided within the community if needed.
Also in October, our new "Mindful Living for Better Health" series will debut at Jake Gaither Community Center. Each series offers six weekly classes to help participants develop lifestyle changes that will have a positive impact on their health and happiness.
Mindfulness is the practice of being aware in the present moment which can greatly reduce destructive, habitual reactions to stress. Recent scientific studies have shown that more than 70% of doctor visits are due to stress-related issues, and stress is linked to the six leading causes of death.
Emphasis of the program. are on small, manageable lifestyle change: nutrition, physical activity, emotions and relaxation. The Mindful Living series will be offered four times during the year.
Class size is limited to provide individual participants with the tools they need to integrate these healthy changes into their lifestyle. Health screenings will be offered and a nutritious lunch served in each of the series' six classes. Advance registration is required. $2 suggested for each class. Contact Toni Walmsley, Southside Program. Coordinator at 891-4009 for more information.
Lunch & Learns, Lifelong Learning
All Lunch & Learns are 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and offer lively and engaging programs for adults 50+. Each includes engaging speakers, exhibitors, health screenings, and lunch. These events are a program. of the Tallahassee Senior Center & Foundation, funded by the Leon County Board of County Commissioners. $6.
Attendees have a lot of FUN at our monthly Leon County Lunch & Learn events, but there are other important reasons to attend. One of the most valuable services we offer is no-cost health screenings. We strive to provide blood glucose and blood pressure screenings at each L & L. There's also hearing, vision, oral health and other various screenings throughout the year. These prove invaluable to many of our participants, some of whom have financial and mobility issues that prevent them from accessing these services elsewhere.
Home health care companies and caring volunteer nurses are there each month to monitor the health and well-being of participants. It is not unusual for someone to discover that their blood pressure is high, or their blood sugar is out of range. While this can be disturbing, at least it's discovered! Knowing is always better than not when it comes to critical health information. Become a regular at a Lunch & Learn event in a community near you. Discover activities to become more engaged and independent! For more information contact Susan Davis at 891-4065.
