Chaires active adults enjoy a side of history with their holiday fun!
By Susan P. Davis, LCSO Outreach Coordinator
The sun was shining and comfortable temperatures added to a lovely field trip for seniors living in the Chaires community of Leon County. First stop: The Florida Governor’s Mansion. Faces were bright with anticipation as we entered the foyer. A historical and intricately designed grandfather clock caught the attention of many, as well as a beautifully adorned Christmas tree. Docents led everyone through the dining room with its Old Florida wallpaper and well-polished silver serving bowls, complete with figures of herons and alligators.
History and Florida culture came alive as the group meandered through the wood-paneled library, spacious living area and cheerful sun-room decked in holiday finery. The tour concluded in the garden area where a bronze sculpture of manatees frolicked in the fountain. Several participants reminisced about previous visits to the Governor’s Mansion. There were warm and happy memories of driving through to look at the house and grounds, especially during the holidays.
Next stop: Lunch, a delicious buffet featuring southern cooking, fresh and hot. Sitting by the windows with old friends and new, relaxed and satiated, made for comfortable conversation and a sense of coveted community. Disembarking at the Chaires Community Center, hugs were plentiful and the holiday spirit was palpable. It was a magical day complete with local history, food, fun and fellowship.
