Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment
September 18, 2020
An assessment team from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA®) will conduct a virtual examination of all aspects of the Tallahassee Police Department's (TPD) policy and procedures, management, operations and support services, Chief Lawrence Revell announced today. Verification by the CALEA team that TPD continues to meet state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to retain its long-standing accreditation — a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence.
As part of the assessment, TPD employees and community members are invited to offer comments by calling 850-891-4424 on Oct. 20 anytime from 1-4 p.m. Comments will be taken by the assessment team, are limited to 10 minutes and must address the department's ability to comply with CALEA's standards. Anyone wishing to submit written comments about TPD's ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155 or email them to calea@calea.org.
A copy of the standards is available by contacting TPD's accreditation manager, Sgt. Danny Jeter, at Danny.Jeter@Talgov.com or 850-891-4307. TPD must comply with 356 applicable standards in order to retain its accredited status.
"The Tallahassee Police Department is one of the longest-tenured, internationally accredited law enforcement agencies in the country, and we welcome CALEA's continued assessment and input to improve service delivery to the citizens of Tallahassee," Chief Revell said.
Accreditation is good for four years, during which the department must submit annual reports, and participate in annual, remote, web-based assessments attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited. For more information about CALEA, please write to them at the address or email noted above or call (703) 352-4225.
