Check Thief Bounced Into Jail
August 31, 2017
The Tallahassee Police Department has identified a recent financial crimes trend and made an arrest in connection with the crimes. Investigators with the Financial Crimes Unit conducted an extensive investigation into numerous incidents of checks being stolen from mailboxes which were then altered and deposited into various bank accounts via ATM. Money would then be immediately withdrawn by the suspect using another person's debit card. These type of cases will surface periodically and have significant financial impact for those individuals and financial institutions involved. Investigators identified Akeem Jones as the one responsible for the organized crime scheme involving stolen and altered checks. Mr. Jones was arrested on several charges and is currently at the Leon County Jail.
The Financial Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate this case and more charges are pending in other related cases. TPD is asking anyone with information to call them at (850) 891-4200 or if they chose to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at (850) 574-TIPS.
