Disaster Planning

The Tallahassee-Leon County "Local Mitigation Strategy" (LMS) is the community's primary planning tool to minimize the risks to individuals and to property from natural and man-made hazards. The current document outlining the means to achieve this goal was prepared in 1999 and adopted by both the City of Tallahassee and Leon County in 2000. The document has been used to guide selected changes to local development codes, prioritize data collection and analysis, and most importantly, to decide how best to use Federal disaster assistance monies that have been allocated to Leon County. These funds were associated with disaster declarations for Tropical Storms Alison, Barry and Helene and for Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Ivan. The LMS directed local government to use these monies for emergency generators, weatherproofing emergency shelters, and installation storm-proof shutters on critical facilities like fire stations, among other community safety needs.
