Lawrence-Gregory Community Center at Dade Street
The Lawrence Gregory Community Center is one of the oldest community centers in the Parks and Recreation system. Housing a gymnasium, meeting and activity rooms, it was opened in 1959, and continues to be an important community hub. The Center was renamed in 2002 in honor of Mr. James Lawrence, retired Recreation Superintendent, and Beulah Gregory, the first Supervisor of the facility. In 2008, the building received a complete renovation.
Its gym currently hosts a variety of basketball and volleyball leagues, along with the Florida Chapter of the United States Naginata Federation.
The Center also runs an after school program, and offers a variety of classes including Arnis de Mano, Filipino Martial Arts, and the Excellence Dance Studio. The center also features a weight and exercise room.
The Lawrence Gregory Community Center is the site of many special events during the course of the year, including the yearly Halloween Carnival, Teen Summit and Black History Celebration. It is also a site in the City's Summer Playgrounds Camp program.
