StarMetro Drivers to Display Skills at Bus Roadeo
Community Invited to Annual Event
March 14, 2019
StarMetro employees and their biggest fans will gather on Saturday, March 16, to cheer on participating coach operators and mechanic technicians at the fifth annual Capital City Bus Roadeo. This friendly competition will be held at StarMetro’s facility, located at 555 Appleyard Drive, from 10 a.m.to 1:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
As part of StarMetro’s 45th anniversary celebration, this year’s Bus Roadeo will include free face painting, live entertainment and plenty of hands-on activities for all ages. There will also be information about how you can become a coach operator.
Parking for the event will be available at the James Messer South Complex, 2830 Jackson Bluff Road. StarMetro will provide a shuttle from Messer to their Appleyard location.
The Bus Roadeo is an annual safety and skills competition for bus operators and mechanic technicians who volunteer to participate. In the operator competition, drivers are evaluated on such skills as judgment stops, intersection turns, obstacle avoidance and pre-trip inspections. They are also given a written test. Mechanic technicians are graded on their ability to identify engine, brake, transmission, heating, ventilation and air conditioning problems.
Champions from the Capital City Bus Roadeo can advance to state, regional and even international contests. The three individuals with the highest overall scores are placed on the team to represent StarMetro at the State competition.
This year’s State competition will be hosted by Jacksonville Transit Authority (JTA) in Jacksonville, Florida, from April 5-6 as a joint effort with the Florida Public Transportation Association, the Florida Rural Transit Assistance Program, the Florida Department of Transportation and the Florida Association of Coordinated Transit Systems.
