Local Athletes Go for the Gold
Registration Open for Capital City Senior Games
February 06, 2014
As Olympic athletes from around the world prepare to showcase their talents in Sochi, Russia, many local athletes are also preparing for their time to shine. Registration is open for the 2014 Capitol City Senior Games. This is an Olympic-style competition for athletes age 50 and older.
Online registration is available at Talgov.com/parks or VisitTallahassee.com/seniorgames. Registration costs $15 for the first event and $3 for each additional event. A one-time venue fee will also be added to registrations for archery, bowling and golf. Additional registration information is available by contacting the City of Tallahassee Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department at 891-FUNN (3866). Registration is open through one week prior to the selected event.
The sports included in the Senior Games are (in alphabetical order) archery, basketball shooting, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, pickleball, powerlifting, racquetball, road race (running), swimming, table tennis, tennis and track and field.
If you’re interested in competing but fear you’re a little rusty, there are training opportunities available for every sport. A list of training information - including locations, times, contact names and phone numbers - is available at Talgov.com/Seniors. You can also get information about training and practice opportunities by calling Kristy Carter at 891-4008.
The Capital City Senior Games will take place from Saturday, March 8, through Monday, March 17, at various sites in the greater Tallahassee area.
A welcome reception will be held for athletes, their families, volunteers and supporters on Thursday, March 13, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Tallahassee Senior Center, 1400 North Monroe Street. Free valet parking will be available.
Competing in the Capital City Senior Games is the first step toward competing at the state level and beyond. Florida residents must qualify for the Florida International Senior Games and State Championships by competing at one of the 18 Florida local senior games. Out-of-state athletes are not required to qualify. The Florida International Senior Games and State Championships is a qualifier for the 2015 National Senior Games, which will be held in Minneapolis, Minn., in summer 2015.
The Capital City Senior Games is only possible with the support of the community. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Susan Davis at 850-891-4065 or email email@example.com for more information. Locally, the Senior Games are sponsored by the City of Tallahassee, Capital Health Plan, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, Audiology Associates of North Florida, Tallahassee Friends of Our Parks Foundation, Visit Tallahassee and the Visit Tallahassee Sports Council.
This is one of the many annual events available for Tallahassee seniors. To stay in-the-know about this and other activities, visit Talgov.com/Seniors or like Tallahassee Senior Center on Facebook. Information on general recreational opportunities offered by the City is available at Talgov.com/parks.
