Partners Team Up for Chemical Chaos
First Responders and Leon County Schools
June 19, 2013
Local first responders along with Leon County Schools will be participating in a mock disaster hosted by the District II Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC). The exercise is tabbed as "Chemical Chaos" and is scheduled to take place on June 21. Exercise play is scheduled from 8:30am - 12:30 pm at Canopy Oaks Elementary School, located at 3250 Point View Drive Tallahassee, FL 32303. The purpose of the exercise is to evaluate current response plans and capabilities for a hazardous materials incident that occurs in a high school setting. First responders participating in the event include the Tallahassee Fire Department, Big Bend Regional Bomb Squad, Leon County EMS, Leon County Sheriff's Office, Tallahassee Police Department and Leon County Schools.
First responders will establish an incident scene and perform those actions usually associated with an initial response to a hazardous materials incident. These actions include command and control, communications, victim rescue, triage and treatment, hazardous materials response and decontamination, on-site incident management and explosive device response operations. Members of the media are being requested to role play during the event to allow the Public Information Officers to perform their duties during the exercise. The Joint Communications Team will provide briefings throughout the exercise, as well as a timely press release to members of the media. Leon County Schools' A.M. Low Frequency Transmitters will be used as a tool to provide up to date information to parents and other interested parties.
If you plan to participate in the event, please contact TFD PIO Lt. Mike Bellamy prior to the event for further instruction. Parking will be available at the exercise site in the main Canopy Oaks Elementary parking lot.
