Race Relations

About the Mayor's Summit on Race, Culture and Human Relations

The mayor launched a race relations initiative in July 1997, to increase and improve the quality and quantity of communication between all races in the Tallahassee community. The focus of this effort is on communication, reconciliation and responsibility to ensure that the issue of race relations remains a priority. The race relations initiative is administered and coordinated by the Equity & Workforce Development department.

There are four parts to the initiative as described below:

  1. MLK Nonviolence Training - Disseminates information on the effectiveness of nonviolence strategies for achieving justice and social change.
  2. Community-wide Study Circles - Facilitates dialogue between racially diverse citizens to develop better understanding of one another and suggest ways for community action.
  3. Youth Human Relations Council - Provides opportunities for youth to have input in developing solutions to better race relations.
  4. Summit on Race Relations - Annual conference that explores issues of race and ethnicity.  The goal is to develop strategies to address its impact on policy, social, economic and cultural matters.
