Equal Opportunity Programs

The EWD has a variety of programs geared to ensure diversity awareness, and a workforce that is representative of its customers and constituents. In particular, the department has developed policies and procedures on anti-harassment and reasonable accommodations. The department also coordinates activities relative to targeted recruitment, the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), Fair Housing and the Volunteer Parking Patrol. The department is in the process of developing an organizational mentoring program to develop and enhance employees' careers.

Complaint Handling

The EWD is a central intake point for employee complaints. At the EWD level, complaints are handled through mediation, as appropriate. Complaints that are determined to be best resolved through investigation are transferred to the City Manager's office. Also, the EWD offers consultation, advice and referral services to employees who may not wish to file a complaint, but who are interested in discussing options to address conflict situations existing in their workplaces.

Volunteer Parking Patrol (VPP) program

The VPP program is under the auspice of the City's Equity and Workforce Develoment Department (EWD). Residents of the City of Tallahassee, after applying, passing a background check and attending one day of training are eligible to become members of the VPP. VPP members receive an ID card and book of tickets for writing parking tickets to anyone illegally parked in a disabled parking space. This is a volunteer program. There are no set limits as to how much or how little time VPP members participate. However, we do ask them to keep track of their volunteer time and report it to the volunteer coordinator once a month. For more information call EWD at 891-8290. Download an application (PDF)
