Restoring Human and Natural Environments to Build Resilient Communities
Residents across Tallahassee and Leon County are embracing sustainability! Their efforts to live more sustainably are supported by a wide array of high quality services and programs offered by the City of Tallahassee. This partnership between government and citizens is essential in creating a sustainable community. Sustainable YOU, North Florida’s premier sustainability conference, celebrated this commitment. The City convened the conference to showcase best practices that protect and conserve natural resources, innovations and advances in community resiliency, and green economic development programs.
The theme of this year's Sustainable YOU conference was The Business of Green – Restoring Human and Natural Environments to Build Resilient Communities. Under this theme, the conference explored topics relating to the Restoration Economy and introduced innovative ideas, policies and programs that address the restoration of our natural environment, the restoration of human and social capital, and rebuild and strengthen our local economy leading to greater resiliency.

This workshop will give attendees, local government officials and developers a crash course in Tactical Urbanism, defined as low-cost, often temporary, changes to the built environment, usually in cities, intended to improve local neighborhoods and city gathering places.
Tactical Urbanism expert Tony Garcia is working with the Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department and FAMU School of Architecture to create a plan for updating the frontage and entryway of the Hi Fi Jazz Café on South Adams Street. During a morning session conference attendees will learn about how Tactical Urbanism is leading to transformations in neighborhoods, and about the plan for the Café.
Conference attendees are then invited to roll up their sleeves and assist in implementing the plan, including painting, light carpentry work, installing planters and patio furniture, and even laying AstroTurf! Participants should expect to get their hands dirty and may choose to bring a change of clothes. This afternoon session is limited to 12 participants.
