Public Safety Efforts Highlight Community Commitment
Commission Takes Next Step in Creation of Public Safety Campus
June 20, 2018
Public safety continues to be a high priority, and through its commitment to the Community Policing model, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) is achieving progress, reporting the lowest crime rate since 2013. To further support TPD’s efforts, the City Commission voted today to take the next step in the creation of the Public Safety Campus.
The proposed facility will include community and recreational spaces, regional training facilities and public safety educational services to help TPD connect and build strong bonds with residents. Additionally, it will serve as the new headquarters of TPD, housing its 410 officers and staff and allowing the department to meet current and future operational needs.
Earlier this year, the Commission authorized staff to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the acquisition of real estate for this facility along the South Monroe and/or Orange Avenue corridors. Three proposals were received, reviewed and ranked based on cost of acquisition, project feasibility (i.e. location, surrounding land uses, access, etc.), acquisition plans and project schedule. The top-ranked bid was submitted by NAI TALCOR.
Following discussion at tonight’s meeting, the Commission authorized staff to negotiate a purchase agreement NAI TALCOR for 12.3 +/- acres currently occupied by the Towne South Center, located at 2525 South Monroe Street. In addition to property acquisition, negotiations may include costs for the relocation and/or buy-out of existing leases within the plaza. Demolition will be necessary to make the parcels usable for the proposed Public Safety Campus.
Updates and opportunities for community feedback will be provided as the project moves forward.
Additionally, data continues to show a downward trend in crime. Through April 2018, violent crime is down 15.2 percent and overall crime is down 5 percent compared to the same time frame of 2017.
