Sandbag Locations to Open Today
City Taking Proactive Measures Due to Anticipated Heavy Rainfall
July 08, 2019
Today, the City of Tallahassee is opening four sandbag locations to help residents prepare for heavy rainfall anticipated this week. This proactive measure is due in part to the National Weather Service forecast calling for an 80 percent chance of a tropical development moving through Tallahassee during the mid-week. The current forecast details heavy rain through the end of the week with the possibility of localized flooding.
Starting at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 8, bags and sand will be available at James Messer Park South, located at 2830 Jackson Bluff Road (on the south side of Jackson Bluff Road between Appleyard Drive and Dupree Street), and at Winthrop Park, located at 1601 Mitchell Avenue (near the tennis courts). By 1 p.m., bags and sand will be available at two additional locations. Those locations will be the Lawrence-Gregory Community Center, located at 1115 Dade Street, and the Jack McLean Community Center, located at 700 Paul Russell Road. Between the four sandbag locations, the City will have approximately 129,000 sandbags available. City crews will monitor these sites and provide additional sand and bags as needed.
Citizens will need to bring their own shovels and be prepared to fill bags themselves. There is a 25 bag limit per household. These sites will be open until the inclement weather has passed and it is determined there is no longer a need.
To help mitigate potential flooding, City crews will check known drainage trouble spots for blockages and clear obstructions. Within the Tallahassee city limits, citizens may report flooded streets by calling 891-4968.
The City is proactively preparing and encourages citizens to do the same. Now is a great time for citizens to update their utility contact information to ensure they receive email and text alerts from the City. To update your City utility account information, visit Talgov.com/Update.
