Commissioners to Tour Stormwater Facilities
May 17, 2006
Leon County Commissioner Cliff Thaell and Tallahassee City Commissioner Debbie Lightsey will join other City and County officials for a tour of local stormwater management facilities this Thursday, May 18. The tour begins at 9 a.m. at the stormwater facility located behind the Trousdell Aquatics and Gymnastics Center on John Knox Road.
The tour is being coordinated by the joint City-County Watershed Management Policy Board, and is taking place so officials can visit several successful local stormwater facilities, along with others that need improvements. Following the tour of the John Knox Road facility, a bus will take officials to other facilities. The bus will depart from the Tallahassee Mall parking lot adjacent to the Parisians wing on the eastern end of the mall.
Crafted by Commissioners Thaell and Lightsey and approved by their respective commissions, the Watershed Management Policy Board is designed to address stormwater issues by looking at the needs of the region's stormwater basins rather than jurisdictional boundaries. Through a coordinated approach to watershed management, the policy board will work to transition the City of Tallahassee and Leon County toward basin-specific Watershed Management Plans over the next five years. The group, which held its first meeting in January, includes technical support staff assistance from the City and County, the Northwest Florida Water Management District, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Lakes Management Society.
