Dorothy B. Oven Park Hosts Annual Elf Night

Dec. 17 event free and open to the public - Staff from the City of Tallahassee's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department at Dorothy B. Oven Park have once again transformed the already beautiful park and meeting house into a true winter wonderland. More than 250,000 lights adorn the park grounds, gardens and buildings, along with a variety of holiday displays for the entire family to enjoy. The public is invited to stroll through the grounds and carriage house during the tenth annual Elf Night event from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17.
Although the park's horticultural unit spent many hours creating and setting up the light display, they began the project in September, effectively working the task in with their routine duties and not costing the City any overtime as well as eliminating the need for extra crews.
Dorothy B. Oven Park, located at 3205 Thomasville Road, is a popular locale during the holiday season for parties and other events because of its inherent charm. "Opening up the park to the public is our way of thanking the Tallahassee community for their support of Dorothy B. Oven Park," said Debbie Pullen, supervisor of the facility. "It's a perfect opportunity for families to take time out from their hectic schedules and enjoy a unique and magical holiday evening together."
Elf Night is co-sponsored by Florida Surplus Lines Service Office and is free to the public. In addition to viewing the decorated house and grounds, visitors can enjoy hot cider, cocoa and cookies. Parents will want to bring cameras and camcorders to record all the smiles and wonderment on their children's faces...and we hope even Santa will stop by for a visit!
For safety reasons, vehicles will not be allowed to drive through Dorothy B. Oven Park during the event. Public parking will be available next to the park at the Thomasville Road Baptist Church as well as at the Piedmont Park Alliance Church across the street.
While the event is free of charge, donations will be accepted for the Tallahassee Friends of Our Parks Foundation Inc. If you can't attend the Elf Night event, the lights will be on display at Dorothy B. Oven Park for your enjoyment through New Year's Day.
