National Dump the Pump Day Encourages Use of Public Transportation - With high gas prices and the summer driving season under way, now is the perfect time to try out public transportation. This Thursday, June 19, StarMetro is making it easy to save gas and money by offering a fare free transit day for all fixed routes. StarMetro, along with other public transit systems nationwide, is offering this fare free day in order to support the ninth annual Dump the Pump Day. Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), this nationally recognized day is designed to encourage the use of public transportation.
"Our awarding-winning StarMetro system is a great choice for residents of all ages," Mayor John Marks said. "Public transportation is a great choice because it's convenient, economical and helps preserve the environment."
Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, Dump the Pump Day emphasizes that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps save money. According to the April APTA Transit Savings Report, a two-person household can save on average more than $10,000 annually by downsizing to one car.
"Saving money can be challenging for families, especially during the summer when children are home and travel increases," said Ivan Maldonado, director of StarMetro. "Riding public transportation, such as StarMetro, is a good way to beat the high gas prices."
StarMetro offers 12 crosstown routes and provides transportation services to Florida State University and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. The transit agency also offers a special Summer Wheels Pass, which is valid from June through August, to students 17 years old and younger for a discounted rate of $33.
