SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL/ISSUE ANALYSIS
HISTORY/FACTS & ISSUES
In April 2009, the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (ASC) submitted a grant application to the Florida Animal Friend (FAF), Inc. spay/neuter license plate program for the purpose of providing free or low cost spay/neuter services for pets. The ASC is currently only funded to sterilize animals that are the property of the city and that are not yet adopted. Additional resources are needed to provide spay/neuter services to animals in the community in order to help stop the flow of abandoned animals into the ASC.
The grant will fund 200 free spay/neuter surgeries (approximately 100 dogs and 100 cats) for low-income residents of the community. City and County Animal Control Officers will identify unaltered animals in low-income areas of the community and contact the animals' owners to provide them with spay/neuter vouchers and educational information about the spay/neuter process.
Approval is needed to accept the grant and appropriate the funds.
