CITY OF TALLAHASSEE
CITY COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM
ACTION REQUESTED ON:
June 24, 2009
SUBJECT/TITLE: Public Safety Presentation
TARGET ISSUE:

STATEMENT OF ISSUE

During the City Commission’s April 8 meeting the Police Department was requested to provide the Commission with an update on crime trends in Tallahassee. The department will provide details about Tallahassee’s changing crime trends, crime reduction strategies, gangs and juvenile crime, and the dynamics of nighttime crowds, which will be discussed during the department’s powerpoint presentation.

Over the last ten years Tallahassee has experienced a decreasing crime rate. That trend, however, is beginning to change. Between 2007 and 2008 violent crime increased by 2% and property crime increased by approximately 6%. Increasing gang activity is also causing problems for our community’s perception of public safety. The department’s Gang Response Unit has validated 225 gang members and associates living in Tallahassee. The Police Department has focused on community partnerships, crime prevention, targeted enforcement, as well as other strategies to address gangs and habitual offenders.
