SUBJECT/TITLE: Reappointment of members to represent the City on the Leon County Science Advisory Committee

STATEMENT OF ISSUE
The terms of the City-appointed members, Richard Wieckowicz and Thomas Kwader, Ph.D., on the Leon County Science Advisory Committee expired March 2009. Both members are eligible for and wish to serve another term. It is recommended that both members be reappointed for an additional two-year term. Members are initially appointed to serve a two-year term, but can be reappointed indefinitely as long as member is active, interested and adheres to the committee’s bylaws.
The Committee is comprised of (9) members with (7) appointed by the Board of County Commissioners and (2) appointed by City Commission. Additional appointments may be made and shall be of an ex-officio nature.
The purpose of the Committee is to safeguard the area’s natural resources and the public health and safety by: (1) evaluating and reporting findings to the County Commission on the scientific evidence, (2) making recommendations concerning policies and programs that pertain to environmental issues in developed and developing areas, and (3) evaluating the need for further data collection and analysis on issues approved by the Board of County Commissioners or the appropriate administrator.
