Proclamation presented by Mayor Marks
to Dee Crumpler, Parks and Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs in recognition of Arbor Day
WHEREAS, In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can cut energy use for heating and cooling, help clean the air, reduce stormwater runoff, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees in our community increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community; and
WHEREAS, trees have always been an important part of our communities excellent quality of life, adding joy and spiritual comfort to generations of residents and visitors alike.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John Marks, by the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Tallahassee, do hereby proclaim Saturday, January 17, 2009 as
ARBOR DAY
in the City of Tallahassee, and urge all citizens to plant and care for trees to help continue the long lasting relationship between trees and our community. I further encourage Tallahassee residents to support efforts to protect our existing trees and woodlands so that we may all enjoy the many benefits of majestic mature trees in the future.
