Efforts to Make Tallahassee Roads Safer Land TPD in Top Spot
October 05, 2020
The Tallahassee Police Department recently won first place in the Florida Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Challenge in the category of 401+ officers. The challenge recognizes the best overall traffic safety programs in Florida and aims to encourage increased statewide enforcement of traffic safety laws to reduce traffic crashes, serious injuries and fatalities.
This award recognizes TPD's efforts, led by its Traffic Unit, to develop and implement a comprehensive traffic safety program, which made a significant and positive impact by reducing traffic-related crashes, injuries and fatalities (see statistics below). TPD’s Traffic Unit is comprised of one sergeant and 12 officers and has been recognized both regionally and nationally for its efforts.
The Florida Law Enforcement Liaison Program, which runs the challenge, is a grant funded initiative sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation and the National Highway Safety Administration. The areas of concentration considered by the challenge include efforts to enforce traffic safety laws and educate the public about distracted and impaired driving, pedestrian and bicycle safety, motorcycle safety and child passenger safety.
