TPD Responds to Bank Robbery (update)

After Wednesday’s Robbery, investigators with the Tallahassee Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit were able to identify Joseph Jefferson III, age 22, as the suspect in the case. They obtained a warrant for the crime and the case was handed over to the Tallahassee Police Department’s Career Criminal Unit and the US Marshal’s Violent Fugitive Task Force.
After extensive surveillance of areas Jefferson was known to frequent, he was apprehended yesterday around 6:00pm. The apprehension occurred while he was walking in the 400 block of Putnam Drive by members of TPD’s Career Criminal Unit, the US Marshals, and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office’s S.P.I.D.E.R. Unit. During the arrest, baggies of substance testing positive for the drug “Molly” were found in his possession.

Shortly after 11 a.m. today, the Consolidated Dispatch Agency received an alarm call from the Wells Fargo Bank, located at 1201 North Monroe Street.
The suspect entered the bank and passed a teller a note implying they were armed and demanding money. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money, they fled on foot out through the west side doors.
The suspect was described as an African-American man in his 20’s with tattoos on his neck and a short afro. He was described as “clean cut,” and was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt over a black shirt.
Although the note implied he was armed, no weapon was seen, and no one was injured during the crime.
This case has been assigned to investigators with TPD's Violent Crimes Unit. Investigators are asking anyone with information about this case to please call them at 850-891-4200 or Crime Stoppers at 850-574-TIPS. TPD will provide more information when it becomes available.
