Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events Announced
January 16, 2020
The City of Tallahassee, in conjunction with a variety of local agencies, will present the 23rd annual Day of Dialogue as part of a series of community events on Monday, Jan. 20. These free events celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by bringing the community together to engage in conversation about how to be a safe, resilient and inclusive community.
Below is the schedule for the day’s events. (Please note times are approximate.)
- NAACP March from C.K. Steele Plaza, 111 W. Tennessee St., to Capitol Courtyard, 400 S. Monroe St., from 10 a.m. to noon
- “Silence is Not an Option” program in the Capitol Courtyard at 11 a.m., which includes
- Remarks by City officials including Mayor John Dailey and other elected officials
- Choral performance
- Judge Stephen Everett
- “Wake UP Call” youth dialogue in the Capitol Courtyard at 12:15 p.m.
- Day of Dialogue in the Capitol Courtyard at 1:30 p.m.
“Wake UP Call” gives youth an opportunity to share their concerns with local government officials, law enforcement, faith leaders, nonprofit groups and university representatives. It is a call to action for youth by youth to put down guns, support non-violence and take a proactive approach to reducing crime.
This year’s Day of Dialogue theme is “From Situations to Solutions.” The program will focus on developing potential solutions to the issues expressed by youth during “Wake UP Call.” This information will be captured and shared with policy makers, as well as the community, for further consideration.
In the event of inclement weather, the programs scheduled for the Capitol Courtyard will be moved to the City Commission Chamber, second floor, City Hall, 300 S. Adams St.
