TPD Makes Arrest in South Meridian Street Shooting (update)

The Tallahassee Police Department has made an arrest in the shooting incident which occurred on Sunday, December 22, 2019 at approximately 1:52 p.m. in the 2300 block of South Meridian Street. Investigators worked persistently on the case, completing a search warrant at the incident location and locating evidence in the crime. After consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, investigators with the Violent Crimes Unit established probable cause to charge Justus Smiley with the shooting on South Meridian Street. Warrants for Smiley’s arrest were obtained Sunday evening.
Smiley was taken into custody by TPD’s Career Criminal Unit on Monday, December 23, 2019. Investigators were able to talk with Smiley about the incident. In addition, a search of the home where Smiley was arrested was completed with the cooperation of the residents. Subsequently, more evidence linked to the shooting was located by investigators. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered the shooting occurred when Smiley became angry after the victims requested he leave the residence. Smiley fled the scene after firing a gun at the two victims.
Smiley was transported to the Leon County Detention Facility for processing. TPD would like to thank LCSO’s K9 Unit for their assistance with this case.

Original Press Release | TPD Investigates Shooting on South Meridian Road | December 22, 2019 at 6:19 p.m.
At approximately 1:52 p.m., the Tallahassee Police Department responded to a shooting incident in the 2300 block of South Meridian Road. Responding officers discovered an adult female and adult male both suffering from gun shot wounds. Both victims were transported to a local hospital and are in stable condition. Preliminary findings revealed that this incident is domestic in nature and there is no threat to the public.
