Senior Services Hosts Events This Fall Promoting All-Around Health
Highlights Include Active Living Expo, TALL Class 11 Preview Reception and Suicide Prevention Workshop
October 01, 2018
The World Health Organization defines "health" as a state of complete physical, social and mental well-being. To help ensure that Tallahassee's active adult population age 50 and older is all-around healthy, the City of Tallahassee's Senior Services division is offering programs this October to keep citizens engaged – physically, socially, mentally, and civically.
With a focus on physical wellness, Senior Services will host the 20th annual Active Living Expo on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 5-8 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Tallahassee Senior Center, located at 1400 N. Monroe Street. The Expo, which is open to the public, will feature more than 80 exhibitors providing one-stop shopping for families and caregivers to get information about local health and community resources. Health screenings and flu shots will also be available both days. Participants are encouraged to bring their Medicare or Capital Health Plan insurance cards.
This year's special anniversary Expo will feature interactive displays, hands-on demonstrations and exciting workshops that highlight Tallahassee's Age-Friendly Community designation by AARP. The event will be divided into zones (health, housing, transportation) that highlight key components of a livable, age-friendly community. The cost to attend the Expo is $3; the admission ticket is good for both days. Complimentary valet parking will be available.
The 20th annual Active Living Expo is sponsored by Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, AARP, Accessibility Solutions, the Tallahassee Democrat and others. To register, contact Kristy.Carter@Talgov.com or call 891-4008.
To help people connect civically, as well as socially, Senior Services will host the Tallahassee Active Lifelong Leaders (TALL) Class 11 Preview Reception on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Tallahassee Senior Center. TALL is an eight-week program, provided in partnership with the Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Tallahassee program, for people aged 50 and older who have an interest in civics and a desire to make a positive impact in the community.
During the Preview Reception, previous participants will share their experiences. Applications for the next class will be available. Interested parties are encouraged to contact Hella.Spellman@Talgov.com or call 891-4007.
Rounding out overall health, Senior Services will focus on the mind by hosting a workshop titled "Society, Seniors and Suicide" on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 6-8 p.m. at the Tallahassee Senior Center. Dr. Martin Swanbrow Becker, Florida State University (FSU) professor and suicide prevention researcher, will lead the program, examining the prevalent societal issue of mental health among older adults. Numerous exhibitors, including local support organizations and mental health providers, will be on hand to provide information and resources.
A light dinner and beverages will be served. A donation of $3 for those 50 years of age and older is suggested. A $5 donation is suggested for all others.
The program is sponsored by the Tallahassee Chapter of NAMI Florida (National Alliance of Mental Illness); UPSLIDE (Utilizing and Promoting Social Engagement for Loneness, Isolation and Depression in the Elderly), a program through Florida Blue and the Tallahassee Senior Center; and Capital Regional Medical Center (CRMC). To RSVP, please contact Ruth.Nickens@Talgov.com or call 891-4042.
