Program Illuminates Safe Neighborhoods
Join the Effort by Walking with TPD and Turning on Your Porch Light
June 07, 2017
This summer, the City of Tallahassee and the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) are asking you to help "Light Up the Neighborhood." The effort is part of this year's Operation Safe Neighborhoods program, which began in 2015 to help promote public safety. This year's series of events encourages residents to shine a symbolic light on crime by reporting suspicious activities in their neighborhoods, as well as literally lighting up their streets by turning on their porch lights for both personal and property safety reasons.
This year's Operation Safe Neighborhoods program, which kicked off on June 1, will continue this Thursday and occur every other Thursday through August 3 from 6-8 p.m. in partnership with area neighborhoods. The community is invited to attend tomorrow, June 8, at the Griffin Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, located at 1100 Richmond Street.
"Proactive neighborhoods that tackle issues head on make a strong community even stronger," Mayor Andrew Gillum said. "By coming together and engaging with our neighbors, we are sending a clear message that we are committed to making Tallahassee a safer place for everyone."
Below is a list of upcoming Operation Safe Neighborhoods events.
- June 8 at Griffin Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, located at 1100 Richmond Street
- June 22 at Friendship Primitive Baptist Church, 700 Putnam Drive
- July 6 at Killearn United Methodist Church, 2800 Shamrock Street
- July 20 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 312 Stadium Drive
- August 3 at the Providence Community Service Center, 1908 Highland Street
At each event, police officers, residents, faith and community based groups will host neighborhood walks, going door-to-door to hand out important safety information and free light bulbs provided by City of Tallahassee Utilities.
"The success of the Operation Safe Neighborhoods program, now in its third year, demonstrates a continued commitment from our officers and residents to enhancing public safety," Police Chief Michael DeLeo said. "As a community oriented policing agency, we know that we'll make greater strides toward addressing the issues impacting our neighborhoods if we work together."
The Operation Safe Neighborhoods program is designed to empower residents and help deter acts of violence by having police officers on the streets working with neighbors to start their own community watch groups.
